Imagine Difficult Scenarios In Preparing For Possible Big One Earthquake, DOST Renato Solidum Says
The Science and Technology Undersecretary Renato Solidum said that imagination can help Filipinos to prepare for the possible Big One earthquake.
Renato Solidum, is the officer-in-charge of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) and at the same time, he is also the Undersecretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
Solidum said that disasters can be considered as manmade if people remain lacking in preparations or appreciations on the danger that can be caused by the earthquake. He also believes that imagining difficult scenarios can help Filipinos to prepare and survive the magnitude 7.2 earthquake, which is also known as the ‘Big One’.
“The importance of having an imagination on what would happen is that we see the things that we need to prepare. Disaster imagination is the key. As Albert Einstein had said, imagination is more important than knowledge,” said by Solidum in an interview quoted by Manila Bulletin.
The DOST Undersecretary also explained that people should imagine where can they hide, is there things might fall on you, and there are open space under your tables? He also said that being well-prepared can help the people to minimize the number of injuries and casualties when the big one earthquake happens.
The “Big One” is a major earthquake, which has a magnitude of 7.2 that could possibly hit Metro Manila and its nearby provinces located at the West Valley Fault. This major earthquake can kill about 34, 000 people and injure 114, 000 people, according to a study.
Solidum also urged the public to check the resiliency of their homes, building, and establishments. Strengthening the building structures can also prevent it from total destruction and can lessen the number of injuries.
