Breaking: Scientists Discover Functioning Artificial Womb

Artificial Womb Discovered by Scientists

Scientists have discovered a functioning artificial womb-like device that could be used to successfully bring premature babies.

The artificial womb-like device was also considered as one of the major medical breakthroughs. It has been tested on fetal lambs and other animals, which were found to be effective and successful in saving very premature fetuses.

The device was developed in resemblance with the environment of a mother’s uterus containing amniotic fluid. The heart of the infant would pump blood using the umbilical cord into the device in replacement of a mother’s placenta in exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide.

The premature infants were kept healthy inside the device through the use of pump less circulatory system. The newborns will have a normal growth, normal lung maturation, brain maturation, and overall body development.

After 105 days or 22 weeks under the care of the artificial womb, the premature infants will be removed for they already much bigger chance to survive. The device could test on very premature human babies within 3 to 5 years.

“The whole idea is to support normal development; to re-create everything that the mother does in every way that we can to support normal fetal development and maturation,” said by Alan Flake, a fetal surgeon at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Researchers look at it as a new solution to help thousands of premature babies if the tests will be successful. Premature birth is one of the leading cause of death for newborns, which could be prevented using this device.

Through the modern medical technologies and equipment developed by the experts, the chance of saving lives has also increased. All we can do for now is to hope that the device would be also successful to human.
