BREAKING NEWS: Magnitude 6.9 Earthquake Hits Chile

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that a Magnitude 6.9 Earthquake hit Valparaiso, Chile on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at exactly 8:38 a.m. (Philippine Time).

According to its latest earthquake bulletin, the 6.9 Magnitude earthquake which struck off Chile earlier was tectonic in origin and it hit at a depth of 25 kilometers.

There is no immediate damage reported but at least 9 aftershocks have been recorded as of press time.

According to USGS, Magnitude 6 earthquake can be “felt by all, many frightened. Some heavy furniture moved; a few instances of fallen plaster. Damage slight.”

Meanwhile, Chilean Navy and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre canceled the tsunami warning that had been issued in Valparaiso noting that the earthquake was not expected to result in a dangerous seismic sea wave.

“We have no reports of victims or significant damage. There have been some landslides in some places, without major complications,” Interior Minister Mario Fernandez on the other hand said.

“In general the situation is pretty normal bearing in mind the quake’s intensity,” he added.

Chile is located in the “Pacific Ring of Fire.” It has produced deadly jolts including the 8.8 magnitude quake in 2010 which triggered a tsunami and killed at least 500 people.

Note: We will continue to monitor any incident regarding the earthquake in Chile and we will post an update here.
