Duterte Wins Time 100 Reader’s Poll 2017
President Rodrigo Duterte has won the TIME 100 poll after leading the survey on the list of world’s most influential people of 2017.
The Philippine president has won a TIME readers’ poll after leading the survey, which asked the readers on who should be included on the annual list of 100 world’s most influential people. The magazine’s list will be released on its official website on Monday (April 17, 2017).
Mr. Duterte garnered 5 percent of the total “Yes” votes in the poll. While, some of the most influential people in the world including the Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Pope Francis, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates have only received 3 percent of the votes.
Previously, President Duterte becomes one of the most popular personalities worldwide due to his anti-illegal drug campaign amid Extrajudicial Killings (EJK), which was criticized by former U.S President Barack Obama, EU, and other human rights groups.
“Since taking office in June, Duterte has waged an aggressive war on drugs that has killed more than 8,000 people in the Phillippines, according to Reuters. The controversial anti-drug campaign has inspired growing opposition from human rights groups and some political leaders, including Philippine Vice President Leni Robredo,” said in the Magazine.
In 2016, the U.S politician Bernie Sanders has won the reader’ poll, while the Russian President Vladimir Putin has topped the survey in 2015. Forbes Magazine has also ranked President Duterte in the list of Most Powerful People.
Time’s editors chose the personalities that will be included on the official TIME 100 list, which will be released on Friday (April 20, 2017).
