Flesh-Eating Disease Consume The Legs Of A Filipino Man ‘Terry Pareja’
A Filipino tourist named Terry Pareja loses his legs after he was infected by a flesh-eating disease during his visit with relatives in Australia.
Terry Pareja, 65-year-old went in the Australian town of Birchip to visit his relatives, but later Pareja became sick and needed to be confined in the hospital for treatment and observation. His relatives believe that he was bitten by a white-tailed spider.
Parejas legs began to swell and turn black, then it was literally eating him alive. His right leg was cut-off last February 27, 2017, in Horsham, Victoria to avoid the spreading of infection in the other parts of the body.
The 65-year-old Filipino man later was brought to a hospital in Melbourne to cut off his other leg due to infection. Jeffmarey Pareja, Terry’s daughter said that the disease was literally eating his father’s body alive. Terry was staying in the hospital for already 12 to 18 months.
Ray Ogleby, Terry’s brother-in-law cited a toxicology report saying that Terry might possibly bite by a spider causing the swelling of his legs. “He (could) hardly walk on Saturday and on Sunday (his leg) started to turn black,” and “There’s no doctor service in Birchip on Saturday and Sunday, so he waited until Monday,” said by Ogleby quoted by Inquirer.
The doctors doubted the claims of Terry’s family that he might have been bitten by a white-tailed spider. They diagnose Terry’ condition as necrotizing fasciitis, a bacterial skin infection caused by Group A Streptococcus resulting to organ failures and loss of limbs.
Raquel Ogleby fearing that Terry could also lose his arms to flesh-eating bacteria if the doctor could not treat him immediately. Jeffmarey already opened a GoFundMe page last month to cover Terry’s hospital bills.
The donations for Terry’s treatments and medications have amounted $35, 000 or P1.3 million as of Thursday (April 06, 2017).
