Coke Products Banned In Negros Occidental For Replacing Sugar With HFCS On Their Products
Coke products were banned in Negros Occidental as the local sugar industries strengthen its call to boycott the company for using HFCS.
Previously, Coca-Cola Company announced that they will be using high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), instead of using sugar on their beverage products. Around 6, 000 stakeholders from the local sugar industry have protested in front of the beverage company in Bacolod City last March 20, 2017.
The protest in front of the bottling plant of Coca-Cola FEMSA Philippines last month was urging Negrosanons to boycott the beverage company. Using HFCS instead of sugar will starve the sugarcane farmers in Negros.
Sugar planter Jean Trebol said that there are numerous bakeshops, restaurants, pension houses, resorts, and local grocery stores were no longer using Coke products. The usage of HFCS instead of sugar can severely affect the sugar capital of the Philippines.
Bacolod City was tagged as the City of Smile and knows as the sugar capital of the country, because of its abundance in sugar. It is also the primary livelihood of thousands of sugarcane farmers in the province.
Coke products were also banned from the showcase in different local festivals in Negros Occidental such as the upcoming Pana-ad Festival. Negros-based businesses were also expected to support the movement against the coke.
