DOST Usec. Solidum Urged Cebuanos To Prepare For The ‘Big One’ Earthquake

Cebuanos Must Prepare For The Possible ‘Big One’ Earthquake, DOST Usec. Solidum Says

The Department of Science and Technology Undersecretary Renato Solidum was urging Cebuanos to be well-prepared for the magnitude 7.2 ‘Big One’ earthquake.

Solidum, the DOST Undersecretary for Disaster of Risk Reduction warned the residents of Cebu that their province could possibly strike by major earthquake, which devastated Bohol in 2013. He also said that Cebu has a greater risk to experience the magnitude 7.2 earthquake due to the presence of active faults.

On Friday (March 31, 2017), 2 simultaneous earthquake drills were conducted at the AFP Central Command headquarters in Camp Lapu-Lapu in Cebu City and Cebu Provincial Capitol. Solidum is one of the evaluators on the earthquake drills.

‘Big One’ Earthquake

The ‘Big One’ is a major earthquake with a 7.2 magnitude or higher, which is expected to strike Metro Manila and its nearby provinces in Luzon due to the possible irregular movement in the West Valley Fault every 400 years.

Previously, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) warned the residents of Metro Manila and its nearby provinces to be prepared for the upcoming major earthquake. This powerful quake could possibly injure more than 100, 000 people and could kill about 34, 000 people.

It could generate an approximately 32 feet tsunami, which can severely damage the residents living in the coastal areas. Building and establishment under the Marikina Fault Line are at stake, so they were also advised to be well-prepared to prevent further injuries and casualties.

‘Big One’ Earthquake

Big One earthquake might strike anytime, so the residents in the affected areas were urged to be well-prepared.
