Samsung Vice Chairman Lee Jae-Yong Arrested For Corruption Charges

Samsung Electronics vice chairman “Lee Jae-Yong” was arrested for corruption charges and influence the impeachment of Park Geun-Hye.

On Friday (February 17, 2017), the vice chairman of Samsung Electronic has been arrested for corruption charges and leading the influence to impeach President Park-Geun Hye. He was arrested on criminal charges and new evidence came out.

“It is acknowledged that it is necessary to arrest (Lee Jae-Yong) in light of a newly added criminal charge and new evidence,” said by a court spokesman quoted by Inquirer. Lee Jae-Yong was accused of paying an estimated $40 million in bribery to Park’s secret confidante in securing policy favors.

On Thursday (February 16, 2017), Yong was detained at the detention center and judges have issued the arrest warrant for the vice chairman at the Seoul Central District Court in Seoul.

Samsung group boss Lee Kun-Hee was the father of Lee Jae-Yong. Lee has been interrogated for several times over scandal allegations. He was able to escape being formally arrested last month due to lack of evidence on the allegations against him.

The group was surprised by the allegations against the vice chairman. Lee was the first Samsung chief that was arrested.

Samsung Electronic is one of the largest smartphone producers worldwide and it is a major part of the South Korean economy. The company was also the biggest donor to a non-profit foundation allegedly used by Choi Soon-Sil for his own gain.

On Wednesday (February 15, 2017), Samsung said that they had not paid any bribes or made any request to get the president’s favor. Meanwhile, prosecutors were already investigating whether Samsung paid Choi to secure state approval.
