Sandro Marcos was mocked by netizens for praising “Rouge One” whose plot is very similar to Martial Law
Sandro Marcos was mocked by netizens for praising the latest of the Star Wars films, which has drawn parallels with the controversial rule of his family in the Philippine government.
Sandro, who is currently studying in United Kingdom, is the eldest son of former senator and vice presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who is the only son of the late former Philippine president and dictator, Ferdinand Edralin Marcos Sr.
The 22 year old Sandro tweeted his fascination to the newest Star Wars film, saying that “Rogue One was incredible”.
His joining to the world praise of the latest of the first of three spin-offs in the popular franchise did not please many of his 280 thousand followers on Twitter.
The simple tweet ignited the long been dormant but boiling anger of Filipinos to the Marcoses, who ruled the Philippines for two decades and put the country under Martial Law in 1970s.
Former President Marcos has been accused of torturing and killing his political and business opponents, as well as amassing billions of dollars from the country during his reign, apart from leaving the nation with billions of debts when he was ousted in the 1986 People Power Revolution.
Rogue One, directed by British filmmaker Gareth Edwards, is a film that follows a plot by rebellion fighters planning to overthrow fascist leaders of the Empire who are determined to build the Death Star.
The Twitter post of Sandro put back to the memories of the Filipino netizens the deadly and painful experience orchestrated by his family to the nation.
Dozens of Twitter users in the Philippines replied to his tweet, drawing the ironic parallels with his grandfather’s dictatorship.
They likened the plot of the film to the experiences during Martial law where the Rebellion was compared to the People Power, the New Republic was compared to the Martial Law, and the Darth Vader was compared to Sandro’s father, Bongbong.
Twitter user Salvador Aquino also commented, saying “the Force is strong with the irony”.
Ferdinand Marcos was succeeded by the Philippines’ first woman president, Corazon Cojuangco Aquino.
Another Twitter user suggested to Sandro, saying what could be more incredible than the Rogue One is the Marcoses’ admission of their family’s crimes against the Philippines and the Filipinos.
The user also suggested that Sandro would apologize for all his family’s doings.
Sandro had also gone controversial because of his tweet after his father’s loss to the vice presidential race.
