Church bells are ringing in Albay province every night at 9 p.m. as a signal to the faithful to pray for an end to extrajudicial killings in President Duterte’s war on drugs.

This was announced by Bishop Joel Z. Baylon during Sunday Mass. He said the ringing of bells in Albay province is a sign that people should pray to stop the killings in the country.

The church bells ring in the province was said to be a sign to call for people to pray and ask God for his grace and mercy and compassion.

“We will ring the bells of our churches and chapels to call our people to pray, to ask God to bless us all with his grace of mercy and compassion,” Baylon said.

Bishop Joel Z. Baylon clarifies that the church is in full support for the president’s desire to eradicate the drug problem in the country. But he said, “It saddens us to see that the majority of the victims are the very same poor whose lives you promised to protect and alleviate from the shackles of abject poverty.”

Baylon said the ringing of bells and offering of prayers would continue for as long as necessary.
