President Duterte earlier called on ERC officials to resign because of rampant corruption but they responded otherwise.
Officials of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) maintained that they will not step down from office despite the call of President Rodrigo Duterte for them to resign.
The chief executive earlier called on the ERC officials to vacate their positions following the unfortunate fate of ERC Bids and Awards Committee Chairman Francisco Villa Jr., who ended his own life, because of rampant corruption in the agency.
ERC Commissioner Ina Asirit, whose term would end on Year 2020, they welcome the investigation to be conducted on ERC officials and the agency’s transactions.
But she maintained that leaving their respected posts will be of no good, especially in the conduct of the probe.
Meanwhile, on the part of Commissioner Alfredo Non, he said that Duterte’s demand for them to leave their posts is yet premature and the public might think that they are guilty of the accusations of corruption if they resign.
Non said that he would rather choose to be subjected to a fair investigation than to step down from his position.
Commissioner Gloria Taruc, moreover, said that their resignation would not resolve the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate fate of Villa.
Taruc said that only a fair investigation could answer the questions on why Villa killed himself.
But Commissioner Taruc assured that if the accusations on corruption are proven and should they be held liable, the ERC commissioners will voluntarily step out of their respective positions.
Sources say that Villa was being forced to sign an anomalous transaction at ERC and so he chose to end his life than be eaten up by the system of corruption.
