Google Maps Released A Controversial Image Of The Heroes’ Cemetery

Google Maps seems to be very updated about the burial of the late former dictator Ferdinand Marcos that it immediately changed the name of the Heroes’ Cemetery.

Google Maps has made an alteration of the name of the Philippines’ pantheon of fallen presidents and members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) into “Libingan ng mga Bayani at Isang Magnanakaw”.

It was a day after the Supreme Court (SC) has allowed the burial of the late former dictator Ferdinand Edralin Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB).

The Marcos Burial was allowed by a 9-5 vote, with one abstention, of the Supreme Court Justices.

A screenshot of the image of the LNMB taken from the Google Maps website had rapidly spread on the internet and social media on Wednesday.

A Twitter user Jed Aguilar (@ JEDnotJadJidJud), posted an appeal to Google Maps sayin: “Google, please make Libingan ng mga Bayani at Isang Magnanakaw permanent”. Adding that the future Filipino generations should not be misinformed.

Another Twitter user Lemuel Untivero (monsieurLem) tweeted: “Very clever”, while Julius Agustin @brodjulius) said in his post: “Thank you (G)oogle Maps”.

On the other hand, a blog used a photo of the Heroes’ Cemetery with the the world “Charot!” under it, meaning its name was a joke.

Google Philippines had immediately apologized for “some inappropriate results” surfacing in Google Maps that shoudl not be. Google said: “We apologize for any offenses this may have caused”.

The company has also assured that their teams are working to the issue quickly.

Internet users can edit information and suggest some changes in Google Maps through the Google Map Maker tool.

Some of those who oppose the Marcos burial at the Heroes’ Cemetery had suggested that the name of the LNMB be changed since not all buried there were heroes.

One of the petitioners who sought to block the Marcos burial at LNMB filed a bill seeking to change the name of the cemetery to “Libingan ng mga Bayani at mga Dating Pangulo” while Chito Gascon, chairman of the Human Rights Commission, suggested it be named “Libingan ng mga Sundalo”.
