Vice President Leni Robredo Visited Philippine’s Poorest Town
Vice President Leni Robredo visited the poorest town of the country “Agutaya”, a 5th-class island municipality in Palawan on Friday (November 04, 2016).
Robredo visited Diit in Agutaya which is one the island municipality of Palawan that uses a native language called Agutaynen. Mayor Perla Bacuel met VP Leni Robredo and submitted a paper and documents showing that Agutaya remains one the poorest municipalities in the country.
The vice president visited the island after Mayor Bacuel met her, according to Councilor Cheryl Apolinario. The island municipality has a population of 11, 906, according to the 2010 census. Agutaya is the second largest island of the Cuyo archipelago that can in the Sulu Sea covered by several islands.
The main source of livelihood and income in Agutaya’s island community is Tambalang or farming seaweeds. The current buying rate of seaweeds is only at a very low cost, according to Apolinario.
