Madonna is Named 2016 Woman of the Year by Billboard

Singer Madonna has been chosen as the 2016 Woman of the Year by Billboard Media Group.

Past recipients of the award include singers Taylor Swift, Pink, Katy Perry, and Beyonce.

Following this, the Material Girl singer will be the guest of honour at the 11th annual Billboard Women In Music event to be held in New York City in December.

“Madonna is one of a minuscule number of super-artists whose influence and career transcend music,” Janice Min, president and chief creative officer of The Hollywood Reporter -Billboard Media Group said.

She added that, “with her creative vision, relentless innovation, and dedication to philanthropic causes, she is an inspiration to hundreds of millions of people around the world, all while shattering every career record out there”.

“She is an important feminist on top of that, a one-of-a-kind artist who’s used her influence to change the conversation around women, sexuality and equal rights,” Min emphasized.

The said award tops a big year for Madonna for this year 2016.

Because of billions of dollars earnings on her concerts, she was named the highest grossing solo touring artist in Billboard Boxscore history with $1.31 billion in total concert grosses. She also wrapped her Rebel Heart Tour in March, which earned $170 million (GBP139.4 million).

Aside from singing, the 58-year-old personality is also helping to build the first pediatric surgery and intensive care unit in Malawi. The unit, which will reportedly open in year 2017, will consist of three operating rooms, a 50-bed ward and a playroom.

The medical facility will be named after her daughter Mercy, who she adopted from the nation six years ago.

In July, the pop icon visited the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital to oversee the construction of the new children’s wing she is helping to fund with the help of her Raising Malawi Foundation, which she created in 2006.

The 58-year-old singer is survived with four children including Lourdes, 20, Rocco, 16, David, 11, and Mercy, 10.
