Mount Mayon In Alert Level 1 Due To Abnormalities

The PHIVOLCS as issued an advisory putting Mount Mayon in Alert Level 1 because of some abnormalities it has manifested.

Mount Mayon is put under Alert Level 1 by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) after some manifestations of abnormalities inside the volcano.

Based on the Mayon Volcano bulletin, a total of 146 quakes were recorded inside the volcano in the past three days.

An increase in sulfur dioxide emission at the crater of Mayon was also recorded.

The nearby bodies of water were also observed to have lowered level while some wells were dried up.

“In view of the above, PHIVOLCS-DOST is now raising the alert status of Mayon from Alert Level 0 to Alert Level 1”, says the advisory.

PHIVOLCS explains Alert Level 1 as “the volcano is at an abnormal condition and has entered a period of unrest”.

The agency reminds the public “to avoid entry into the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to perennial hazards of rockfalls, avalanches, ash puffs and sudden stream-driven or phreatic eruption at the summit area which may occur without warning”.
