Sharks For Sale In Negros?

Young blacktip reef sharks are reportedly sold just like any ordinary fish at Sipalay City Public Market in Negros Occidental.

Sipalay City, a fourth class component city in Negros Occidental Province, is known for its tourist spots and shark sightings but who would have thought that the wagging sharktails in the sea can be a normal dish on Sipalaynons’ tables?

According to a report by ABS-CBN, young blacktip reef sharks are being sold at the Sipalay City Public Market in Negros Occidental.

Advocate Dave Albao, the executive director of the Philippine Reed and Rainforest Conservation Foundation Inc. (PRRCFI), said these sharks are openly sold in the market just like any other fish and animal meat.

He cited the lack of laws prohibiting fishing and selling of sharks made the trade a like-no-other market sight.

According to the report, sharks are hunted and sold usually for their meat and mostly their fins which is a main ingredient in marking shark-fin soup, one in the menu that is best seller among the resorts and accommodation lodges in the city and neighboring towns.
