10, 000 Hectares of Cornfield, Damaged by Drought

10, 000 hectares of cornfield were critically damaged by drought. Due to lack of rainfall in Echague, Isabela the irrigation system of the cornfield became drought because of extreme heat.

According to the municipal agriculturist Loreta Aguilar, they declared the area as “drought affected” the 9,900 hectares of cornfield in 60 barangays of Echague, Isabela. The irrigation lacks water according to the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) in South High Canal therefore over 2, 086 farmers have no water to use for their crops.

Most of the corns harvested by the farmers are already dried and almost no grain was left. These corns cannot be sell in the market so they preferred to feed their animals with these crops. Almost 20 percent is the equivalent of the total harvests of barangay was damaged by drought.
