Higher Salary For Public School Teachers?
A veteran lawmaker has been on the move to increase the basic monthly salary of public school teachers.
In a report by Manila Bulletin, Cebu Rep. Raul Del Mar had asked his colleagues to help him pass his bill that is purposed to upgrade the salary grade of public school teachers, both elementary and secondary. The current Salary Grade (SG) is 11 up to SG 20.
His proposed bill seeks to increase the basic monthly salary of teachers to a minimum of P36,000. Currently, teachers receive a minimum salary of P18, 549 based on the third phase of the Salary Standardization Law (SSL3).
“Teachers are considered to be the prime mover of the education system; hence, the government needs to give priority to their interest and welfare,” said Del Mar as quoted in the report.
According to Del Mar, public school teachers are among the “underpaid workers in society” and noted that other government employees under the SG 20 receive a basic monthly salary of P36,567.
“Despite the fact that they are heralded as molders of children’s future, they receive only less than twenty thousand a month each for their basic salary,” he added.
Del Mar explained that the proposed bill, the upgrade in the salary of teachers “shall be adjusted according to their qualifications and length in service” and not to be prejudiced by the board adjustments.
The provision added that the government needs to prioritize the educational budget allocations over the others. It also urges the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to do the adjustments in the budget needed for the provisions of the pushed Act.
What can you say about the pushing of the salary increase for teachers in public schools? Would this come into a reality?
