Giant Pineapple Grows After Supertyphoon Yolanda

A giant pineapple grows in Tacloban City, Leyte, the most affected province hit by the super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) last November 2013. A young boy named Steve Nash Diaz has planted the said pineapple that hasn’t bear fruit until just recently.

In a report by ABS-CBN, the people from the rural area got baffled with what they saw. Steve’s family was also surprised when the pineapple grew in a very different and unusual way.

Instead of the usual cylindrical-shaped fruit, the fruit grew like a shape of a fan. Also, the fruit also had grown into a single bunch of spiky green leaves that looked like a weird wreath that grew from a fan-shaped fruit.

Now, the pineapple grew in great size and shape. Now that the fruit is about to ripen, there’s one thing on the boy’s mind – is the oddly shaped pineapple safe to eat?

Pineapples are rich in vitamins and minerals. They can be eaten after peeling, can be juiced to make a really refreshing and healthy drink, and can be used in different dishes.

The Philippines is currently the world’s biggest producer and exporter of pineapple. And most of the pineapple produced in the country comes from the second largest island of the country – Mindanao.

There are huge plantations and factories of pineapples in Mindanao being dominated by Del Monte Philippines Inc. and Dole Philippines. Thousands of workers have been working on these plantations and factories every single day.

The soil of Mindanao seems perfect in the production of pineapples. What would make it best, it that these companies would treat their workers well.

What can you say of the giant pineapple the grew in Tacloban?
