 Duterte Prefers “Hanging” over “Injection” as Punishment to Lawbreakers

“Hanging” over “Injection” – Danilo Suarez, Quezon Representative and one of the lawmakers who is present during the meeting said that Duterte is in favor of hanging over lethal injection.

In an interview with ABS-CBN, Suarez said, “”Hindi daw nakakatakot yung lethal kasi patutulugin mo. Samantalang yung hanging makikita mong nagkakawag-kawag doon.”

During the May 15 press conference, the President-elect expressed his motive to reintroduce this kind of penalty by hanging as a corresponding punishment for lawbreakers who commit

“heinous crimes” especially those who are in involved in illegal drug trade and other syndicates.

“If there is no fear in the law, wala yan. Yung hanging, once the spine is ripped off inside, wala na. Just like putting off a light,” Duterte said.

Furthermore, leader of Maverick also considering this kind penalty for corrupt officials who found guilty of plunder.

Duterte, who is famous as crime-fighting mayor of Davao for almost 2 decades has earned him the title as The Punisher. Human Rights Watchdogs blamed him and his so-called “Davao D3ath Squad” for sentencing hundreds of criminals in the city.

This kind of penalty for heinous crimes is allowed under the 1987 Constitution and was restored during the term of President Fidel V. Ramos. Commission on Human Rights has recorded it 7 times under the regime of Presiden Joseph Estrada.

However, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo abolished this kind of penalty in 2006 prior to her trip to Vatical for an audience with Pope Benedict XVI.
