17-Year-Old Cebuana Wins International Award For Malunggay Anti-Tumor Study

A young scientist from Cebu was recently awarded by the Qatar Foundation For Research and Development in Medical Science for her malunggay anti-tumor study during the 2016 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (IISEF).

Arianwen Rollan was a 17-year-old student from Cebu City National High School who that only Filipino given the award during the IISEF for her research on the anti-tumor properties of Moringa oleifera or malunggay seeds.

In a report by Interaksyon, Rollan competed against 1,700 participants from more than 77 countries this May in the global high school science research competition. She was also among the eight Filipino students who participated the international event.

However, the top honor went to Han Jie Wang, from Canda after developing microbial fuel cells that are “more efficiently convert organic waste into electricity.” Wang then received a Gordon E. Moore Awards and a $75,000 prize money for his work.

Rollan also received $1,000 as her reward while the other six hundred finalists also received awards and prizes on their efforts as said in Inquirer.

In a report by Sun Star, Rollan, who is a Grade 11 student and currently enrolled at Cebu National High School is the second child of a doctor and a businessman. She said that the research which she was recognized was actually started by her older sister.

According to her interview with Interaksyon, she was inspired to do the study because of the number of people who were passing with canc3r. She added that her grandmother and her sister were among them.

Knowing that the medications for the treatment of this health condition, she pursued to look for a less harmful and more inexpensive alternative.
