She also told AFP: “Every birth counts,”
“One birth doesn’t save the species, but it’s one more Sumatran rhino.”
Body parts and their horns were the main targets of poachers and sell these on the black market with very high prices.
These were being traditionally used by Chinese people in medicine.
Habitats on Sumatra Island are also being d3stroyed because of expansions of paper, palm oil and pulp plantations.
Malaysia also declared their extinction last year.
Distinctive for their twin horns and woolly hair, the remaining few rhinos exist in small groups of 2 to 5 in jungles of Indonesia.
Conservationists are carefully preserving the remaining rhinos from small groups into larger ones, to ensure a longer life span of these species.
It will take for at least six to seven years before the new calf is ready to be mated.
Ellis said: “She seems to be healthy,”
“They come out and they’re so skinny, but she’s started to fill out a little bit today.”
She added: “I burst into tears, because it was just such a special moment and such a joyous occasion.”
