United States of America Congratulates Presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte
The United States of America congratulated presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte and is aiming to deepen the US-Philippine ties on Duterte’s coming administration.
According to a report on GMA News, Washington has made a rare move of congratulating a winner in the May 9 elections even though the results are still unofficial. But, virtually, the numbers of Duterte has been a huge statement.
The United States and the Philippines have been deepening the military cooperation since the dispute on the territories in the West Philippine Sea against China is just increasing. The Philippines and the US already signed a mutual defense treaty since 1951.
The US plans to send its troops and their equipment to he closed bases in the Philippines from 1992. Actually, the two countries have already started having joint patrols in the West Philippine Sea wherein China claims to be their territory.
The report says that the United States made it clear that it plans to work with Duterte even though, the incoming President is criticized for allowing vigilante-styled justice on his two-decade term as the mayor of Davao City.
“The United States offers its sincerest congratulations to the people of the Philippines on the conclusion of the May 9, 2016, general elections, and to the presumptive president-elect Rodrigo Duterte,”said Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau as quoted in the article.
The “giant nation” is also looking forward to continuing the deepness of the bilateral partnership with new coming administration as they are addressing common challenges and “issues of mutual interest.”
