Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and wife of Sen. Cayetano, Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano visited the province of the influential and powerful family of Ilocos Sur, the Singsons, headed by its kingpin former governor Chavit Singson. In an interview with the media, Mayor Duterte was inspired with the warm reception of the Singsons in Ilocos Sur.
According to spokesperson of Mayor Duterte, Peter Laviña, the public display of friendliness was a proof that Mayor Duterte’s desire and ability to work with any on or any group if only to push for genuine change once he is elected to office.
Peter Laviña was quoted as saying “The Duterte-Cayetano camp is bouyed up by another warm reception, this time in Vigan, Ilocos Sur — part of the vaunted Solid North,” said .
The 70-year-old Mayor Rodrigo Duterte was welcome by no less than the Singson patriarch, former Ilocos Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson received Mayor Duterte before the presidential candidate presented his agenda in a rally at the Vigan Convention Center.
Aside from Mayor Duterte, also present during the reception were incumbent Gov. Ryan Singson and Vigan Mayor Eva Marie Singson-Medina.
Ilocos is considered as one of the so-called Solid North, a regional bloc vote that includes Cagayan Valley and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). As of 2010, the Ilocos Sur province has 385,553 registered voters. Vigan, the capital of the province, has 26,362 registered voters. The city was also included in the list of New7Wonders Cities.
