Bloomberg: China-linked Hackers Hit American Airlines, Sabre Systems

A Bloomberg report revealed that China-linked hackers allegedly attacked the computer systems of travel reservations distributor Sabre Corp and American Airlines Group Inc., although the airline said there was no evidence yet of such a breach.

It was also reported on Friday that the incidents at the travel companies were consistent with incursions by hackers that also targeted insurer Anthem Inc. and the US government’s personnel office.

The report also cited people familiar with the investigations.

In the email sent to Reuters by Sabre, the just recently learned of a cyber-security incident.

“At this time, we are not aware that this incident has compromised sensitive protected information, such a credit card data or personally identifiable information, but our investigation is ongoing,” Sabre said.

Sabre operates IP addresses still registered to American’s name.

Meanwhile, American Airlines spokesman Casey Norton said the carrier has found no evidence that its customer data might have been intruded.

“American has worked with outside cyber security experts who checked digital signatures, IP addresses and the style of attack, and there’s no evidence to suggest a breach similar to that experienced by the US Office of Personnel Management,” Norton said in an email to Reuters.

Bloomberg also reported last month that China-based hackers also targeted the systems of United Continental Holdings Inc. which the airline earlier.

However, Norton assured that they will redouble their efforts and bring in more cyber security experts to investigate and defend their systems.
