The recruiter of the convicted and soon to be executed Mary Jane Veloso earlier surrendered to authorities in Nueva Ecija.
DZMM reported that Maria Kristina Sergio voluntarily surrendered to police authorities following the verdict of Indonesia on the drug-trafficking case of Veloso.
With regards to Veloso’s case, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) had earlier filed illegal recruitment, human trafficking, and estafa charges against Sergio and two others.
The 30-year-old Veloso was sentenced to death by Indonesian authority due to drug smuggling. However, Veloso’s lawyers insist that Sergio took in Veloso into the unknowingly smuggling 2.6 kilograms of heroin into Indonesia which Sergio denied Thursday in the ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol.
With few time left, Lawyer Edre Olalia, the secretary secretary general of the National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) said that “the least that she (Sergio) can do is to declare categorically that Mary Jane is innocent.”
Olalia also added, “If President Widodo still stands by his position, it will put to rest any remaining doubts about her innocence.”
Veloso is slated to be executed anytime after 5 pm today.
