PHIVOLCS: Magnitude 6.2 Earthquake Struck Catanduanes

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed that a 6.2 earthquake struck just off Catanduanes on Monday night. The undersea tremor hit 92 kilometers northeast of Virac, Catanduanes at 11:13 PM.

Phivolcs noted that the earthquake was shallow and tectonic in origin, but the agency released some intensities in the areas affected by the tremor.

Intensity 3 was raised in Pangniban, Catanduanes; Sorsogon City; and Legazpi City while Intensity 2 was felt in Naga City. The agency also expects damage and aftershocks from the main quake.

The Philippines lies in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where it is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activities. According to the updates released by various local government units in the areas affected there no reports of damage caused by the Catanduanes earthquake.
