Bagyong Ruby: The Longest Typhoon to Stay in the Philippines Since 1982

Bagyong Ruby (international name “Hagupit) is considered as the longest tropical cyclone to hit the Philippines since the year 1982 according to the records released by the country’s longest weather bureau (PAGASA). It is also considered as the strongest typhoon this year 2014.

The weather disturbance “Ruby” entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Thursday, December 4, 2014 last week and it is forecast to leave the country this coming Wednesday or Thursday, December 10-11, 2014.

The typhoon Ruby was once classified by the US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning (JTWC) as a “super typhoon” but it slowed down while inside the Philippine Area or Responsibility.

The latest typhoon that hits the country, made its first landfall in Dolores, Eastern Samar on Saturday evening, December 6, 2014. Bagyong Ruby made another landfall in Masbate on Sunday and Marinduque on Monday, while the fourth landfall was in Batangas late afternoon on Monday.

The last landfall of Bagyong Ruby was at Lubang Island, Mindoro on Tuesday morning, December 9, 2014. Compared to previous super typhoon Yolanda that devastated the Visayas Region, the worst typhoon to ever hit on land made a total of six landfall in different areas in Central Philippines within one day.

Meanwhile according to a news reports posted by Kim Atienza on TV Patrol on Tuesday, December 9, the longest typhoon to stay in the Philippines during the year 1982 was typhoon “Norming.” The weather disturbance stayed inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) for 15 days or little over two weeks.
