Bagyong Hagupit (Ruby) to Become a Super Typhoon in 48 Hours

Tropical Cyclone Hagupit (Bagyong Ruby) is expected to become a super typhoon in the next 48 hours according to the fearless forecast made by the Hawaii-based Joint Typhoon Warning Center of the US Navy on Wednesday, December 3, 2014.

According to JTWC statement, the favorable sea surface temperatures, along with continually favorable upper-level conditions, will allow the system to further intensify and is expected to reach super typhoon status, the JTWC noted.

Based upon the latest update released by PAGASA on Wednesday night at around 11:00 PM, the weather disturbance “Hagupit” was located based on all available data at 1,108 km East of Hinatuan City, Surigao del Sur.

Bagyong Hagupit (Ruby) packed a maximum sustained winds of 160 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 195 kph, forecast to move West Northwest at 25 kph.

The JTWC also forecasts Tropical Cyclone Hagupit (Bagyong Ruby) to pack as much as 240 kph (130 knots) winds by December 5, 2014 (Friday) at around 8:00 AM, when it is nearer the Philippines.

In an earlier press conference, PAGASA weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said that Hagupit is expected to grow stronger as it gathers more power over the Pacific Ocean, but stressed that based upon the data, Bagyong Ruby will not be as strong as super typhoon “Yolanda.”

PAGASA also noted during a press briefing that the winds brought about by Hagupit is expected to produce storm surges as high as 4 meters.
