The top-grossing international movie “Maleficent” featuring Angelina Jolie dominated the Philippine box office with a total of P179.9 million revenue in just five (5) days of showing in Philippine cinemas. The announcement was made by the local office of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International.
The film distributor of Walt Disney in the Philippines noted that the movies opening gross is the year’s second biggest, bested only by last April’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (P251-M), but higher compared to “X-Men: Days of Future Past” which earned P175-Million.
The movie Maleficent opened huge in the country surpassing the lifetime revenues of Disney’s non-Marvel titles, namely “Prince of Persia,” (P156-M), Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” (P155-M) and “Alice in Wonderland” (P140-M).
Aside from the huge success of Maleficent in the Philippines, the movie also pared well worldwide, debuting at $70 million domestically (US) and $100.6 million internationally.
According to the data gathered by Walt Disney in the Philippines, the movie reeled off in 264 screens (including 8 IMAX) in 122 locations nationwide. SM garnered the most number of receipts particularly SM North Edsa with an P8.41-M box office receipts. SM Mall of Asia generated (P8.29-M), SM Megamall (P8.06-M), SM Cebu (P7.09-M) and Trinoma (P6.19-M.)
