Iran Defeated Gilas Pilipinas 85-71 Settles for Gold Gilas for Silver (Highlights Video)

The mighty Iranians conqured the gallantly standing Gilas Pilipinas basketball team and captured the gold of the FIBA Asia Championship while the Philippines settles for the Silver medal in the competition.

The silver medal of the Philippines is the country’s best finished since conquering the Asian Basketball Championship in 1985. The Gilas Pilipinas missed the service of their naturalized center Marcus Douthit who suffered an injury during the semi-finals against Korea.

NBA veteran center, Hamed Haddadi who stands at 7-foot-2 was unstoppable at the paint scoring with 29 points and 16 rebounds. Bahrami and Kamrani added 19 and 15 each for Iran, which won its third Asian title in the last four stagings.

The Philippines missed their top scorer, Douthit, but the team playing with a big heart stayed within striking distance, falling behind by just a one-point lead during the halftime at 34-33.

The Iranians dominated the paint and made an early 10-point lead in the third quarter while the Gilas got into early penalty. Gilas top defensive player Marc Pingris also suffered with a sprained ankle but was still playing for Gilas.

During the fourth quarter the Iranians showed their might as they made an 8-1 run to push the lead to 16 points. Gilas was able to cut the lead to just 11 points but an unsportsmanlike fould called on Gary David allowed Iran to score four straight points for 78-63 with less than 3 minutes remaining.

The Philippines rebounded with a four-point play through De Ocampo’s three points but the Iranians responded with their own attack, the Philippines couldn’t come closer by 12 points the rest of the way. The Talk ‘N Text duo of Jayson Castro and Jimmy Alapag led the Philippines with 18 and 13 points apiece.
