One of the leading internet company, Yahoo, announced that they have acquired, Rockmelt, a U.S.-based startup that built web browser tied to Facebook’s social network. The acquisition of Rockmel is Yahoo’s 20th acquisition since Marissa Mayer became the company’s CEO.
Yahoo’s acquisition deal of Rockmelt was not disclosed to the media as of press time, but Rockmelt announced officially the acquisition through a blog post posted on its website.
Rockmelt did not give further details with regards to the acquisition amount but according to technology insiders, the company had already raised about $40 millio from venture capitalists and other investors since its inception. Yahoo buy Rockmelt in the amount that surp(–foul word(s) removed–)ed their fundings.
The company Rockmelt was known for its Facebook-focused web browser in the late 2010, but it never gained enough traction. The startup later introduced a version designed for smartphones and tablets.
Rockmelt’s technology could help Yahoo in its effort to bring in more traffic and revenue from mobile devices, one of Yahoo’s CEO Mayer’s top priorities. Most of the technology acquired by Yahoo recently have been focused on mobile computing.
The company Rockmelt is not as big as the recent Tumblr acquisition of Yahoo, but it can boasts of well-known financial backer that include Web browser Marc Andreesen, the co-founder of Netscape Communications and one of the Silicon Valley’s top venture capitalists. With the acquisition of Rockmelt’s their top executives that includes Tim Howes and Eric Vishria, will be joining Yahoo.
