Malacañang Celebrated 150th Anniversary Survived Name Change

The Philippines’ official residence of the Chief Executive, the Malacañang Palace celebrated its 150th anniversary on Tuesday, June 11, 2013. The Palace started out as a summer house and eventually became the seat of executive power and served as the office and residence of the Philippine President.

The Palace survived numerous earthquakes, wars, fires and even an attempt to rename the complex according to Presidential Library and Museum Head Edgar Ryan Faustino.

Faustino revealed that there was a proposal to change Malacañang’s name to “Beunacañang” supposedly to ward off negative energies in the Palace but the movement was not enough as the place still bears its name for the past 150 years.

Malacañang’s name is derived from the expression “May lakan d’yan” when people pointed to the Palace and referred to the noble man that lived in the Palace. Attempts to transfer the current residence of the Philippine Presidents were also failed during the past few years.

Meanwhile Edgar Ryan Faustino invited the public to visit the official website for an online commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Malacañang.
