The reigning 122-pound world boxing champion, Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire accepted the highly-touted Sugar Ray Robinsons Trophy as the 2013 Fighter of the Year.
The 30-year-old Filipino boxer was emotional during the awarding ceremony which acknowledged his impressive performance for the year 2012. Donaire fought four times in 2012, winning the first two by decisions and the other two by explosive knockouts.
He was considered as the busiest boxer of 2012 among the elite fighters of the world. He was now regarded as the top 5 pound-for-pound boxer. The Filipino Flash won his fourth belt in a third weight division.
The Filipino champions achievement was recognized by the Boxing Writers (–foul word(s) removed–)ociation of America as he was named as the 2012 Fighter of the Year by the BWAA during its annual ceremonial dinner.
Nonito Donaire cannot contain his emotions during the ceremony as he accepted the trophy from BWAA President Jack Hirsch. Donaire was also recognized by major news media organization in the USA as he led the sport by voluntary submitting to round-the-clock testing by VADA.
