The impressions was perhaps because of the town’s fiesta atmosphere during the Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, but for Bantayanon, this is the way they celebrate the Lenten season.
One of the highlights of the Bantayan Holy Week celebration is the witnessing of the town’s grandiose processions withe their life-sized carrozas dominating the main streets of Bantayan town.
Right now the Holy Week in Bantayan features, 16 carrozas brought on Maundy Thursday and 17 on Good Friday. Some of the original processional images are now in the hands of prominent families in Bantayan. These images used to belong to the Church of St. Peter and Paul Parish. They were listed by the former parish priest Fr. Leoncio Aguilar in June 1887 inventory.
Most of the images processioned during Holy Week came directly from Spain brought by Spanish friars but some latter images were commissioned by rich families and were sculpted by prominent local artisans like Severino “Ma Binoy” Carabio and Antonio Tinga.
One of the most popular among the carrozas, is the celebrated image of the Santo Entierro which was according to the locals of Bantayan, the most miraculous image during the procession that brought luck to local fishermen.
Bantayan island unique Lenten Season is indeed captured the local and international tourist around the Philippines, hopefully Bantayanons will someday discover the real meaning of the P(–foul word(s) removed–)ion of Christ and His Resurrection.
