Philippine Azkals Targets First International Title Against Chinese Taipei

The Philippine National Football Team is now eyeing for a rare opportunity of making it to the record books in international football competition. They were eyeing to win the crown in the finals of the Philippine Football Peace Cup.

The win will end the Philippines, title drought for the past 100 years, the Philippines made several successes during the early days of international football especially during the time of FC Barcelona’s most famous player, Paulino Alcantara but since then the Philippines failed to make a mark in international football titles.

The Philippines marched to the Finals after they have defeated Guam and Macau on their first two games which also keeps the Philippines’ goalkeeper Edward Sacapano a clean sheet in the entire tournament.

The Philippine Azkals only needs a draw to settle for the championship title, in the on-going four-nation tournament which was more popularly known earlier as the Long Teng Cup but was now renamed as the Philippine Peace Cup.

Two of the most prominent goal-scorer for the Philippine team were both Filipino-German, Patrick Reichelt with 2 goals and Denis Wolf with a hat trick in the tournament.

Denis Wolf is a strong contender with the Golden Boot Award, an award given to any footballer with the most number of goals, the title was won consecutively by Filipino players, Ian Araneta in 2010 and Chieffy Caligdong in 2011.

The German coach of the Azkals, Michael Weiss sounded a little bit concerned with the conditions of his players but he (–foul word(s) removed–)ured to the fans that the players are rearing to win the title, to prove once and for all the emergence of football in the Philippines.

The Philippine Azkals vs. Chinese Taipei match will kick-off at around 7:30 PM today, September 29, 2012 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
