Apple Victorious on Infringement Case Against Samsung Awarded with $1.8 Billion in Damages

One of the most popular case involving technology company is the patent war between Korean electronics giants Samsung and the US technology giant Apple. The jury have already released their verdict and ruled mostly in favor of Apple.

The American company Apple will be awarded with a total of $1,049,343,540 in damages while Samsung will be awarded with nothing. The case involved some of the most famous products from Apple and Samsung.

Some of the devices involved were the Captivate, Continuum, Droid Charge, Epic 4G, Fascinate, Galaxy Ace, Galaxy Prevail, Galaxy S, Exhibit, Infuse 4G, Mesmerize, Nexus S 4G, Gem, Galaxy Tab, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Replenish, Vibrant, plus every carrier’s version of the Galaxy S II.

Here’s a summary of what the jury have decided:

  • Apple did not infringe any Samsung products.
  • Samsung infringed on patents for “381,” the “bounce back” scrolling functionality on all devices.
  • The “915” patent, relating to one finger to scroll, two to pinch and zoom navigation, all but three Samsung devices (Ace, Intercept and Replenish) infringed.
  • For Apple’s ’163 patent (tap to zoom) all Samsung devices except Captivate, Indulge, Intercept, Nexus S 4G, Transform and Vibrant infringed.

The largest damaged according to the jury’s verdict came from the prepaid Galaxy Prevail which is worth more than $57 Million.

Apple failed to meet the total monetary demand which is around $2.525 Billion but the success of the company with the latest rulings proved something more than the monetary gains but it will also served as a warning to those company that tried to copy Apple or developing products that are already patented by the company.
