Nuclear power plant not responsible for leukemia

BRITAIN – A recent finding according to experts shows that lesser chances for leukemia illness is seen to those children living near the nuclear power plant than those living somewhere else.

And other possible factors for leukemia harming the children are currently being traced and studied based on an article published in Britain.

The risks was “extremely small, if not actually zero”, says Committee on Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment (COMARE).

COMARE was established 1985 to study and to advise the British Government towards radiations effect to health. And for the past 35 years, they had 430 examined cases of leukemia taking within  25 kilometers of nuclear power plants.

COMARE had been examining data since 1969-2004 for the 13 nuclear plants situated in Britain and they had been observing children under five years old and each year, 500 children had developed leukemia but the good news was that majority were cured.

Aside from that, the committee had made recommendations to the government that there are other factors involved in children leukemia.

Furthermore, they had reported earlier that through observations, kids coming from wealthier family are most likely to have leukemia since they are less expose to crowd and there resistance and immunity to infection is not as strong than those who have regular contacts with other children. And those children who are exposed to people and children their age are said to be less prone to get leukemia since they had improved and strengthened their level of immunity towards infections causing the said sickness.

However, as the Committees Chairman, Professor Alex Elliott from the University of Glasgow stressed that they should not be complacent about the issue, instead the government should be looking for other causes beyond radiation to leukemia hitting the children.
