Boxing analyst predicted Nonito Donaire as the next to follow the footstep of Manny Pacquiao as the Filipino idol after he was recognized as one of the top boxers of the past year during the 11th Gabriel “Flash” Elorde Memorial Boxing awards and Banquet of champions on March 25 at the Ballroom of the Sofitel Plaza Hotel.
Donaire made big news last year after defeating Wladmir Sidorenko by a fourth round knockout and taking the vacant WBC Continental and American Bantamweight title.
Including his glorious fight last year are the third round knockout of Manuel Vargas regaining the WBA superflyweight interim world title in February and in July he was successful in defending his WBA superflyweight interim world crown after defeating Herman Marquez in the eighth round via TKO in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Along with Donaire who will be recognize as one of the Elite cast of 2010 world champions are the only woman world champion Ana Julaton and Donnie Nietes, while Manny Pacquiao will be honored for his eight titles in as many division during the year.
First to be inducted is Manny Pacquiao as hall of famer after having seventh consecutive award as boxer of the year in 2009. He will also be the guest of honor and speaker during the rites held in memory of Flash Elorde, who was once the world junior lightweight champion for seven consecutive years from 1960.
Elorde Clan led by Laura Elorde the wife of late Flash Elorde, who founded the Elorde annual awards said that they will also give honor to over 50 international and Philippine champions, the best judges, referee and match as well as personalities and entities who have contributed in the world of sports who have already retired.
The Elorde annual award is made possible through the Johnny Elorde Management International and the Gabriel “Flash” Elorde foundation in coordination with other sponsors: Cobra Energy Drink, Sanicar Kitchen Towels, Family Rubbing Alcohol, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, Smart, Samsung and the Elorde Gyms.
