Inmates at Manila City Jail Target to Cover 10,000 Books Before Class Opening
FREE BOOK COVERING PROGRAM – The Manila City Jail inmates were aiming to cover around 10, 000 books before the opening of classes.
As the new school year approaches, the Manila City Jail has once again launched its “Free Book Covering Program.” The program is part of their annual support for the Department of Education’s Brigada Eskwela, where different sectors come together to help prepare schools for the opening of classes.
According to Jail Superintendent Lino Soriano of the MCJ Male Dormitory, the goal is to help parents lessen the burden of school expenses by offering free plastic covers for students’ books.

The simple gesture also helps parents save time in preparing their children’s school supplies.
Inmates, also known as Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs), are leading the effort, working with care and dedication to cover thousands of books. Their goal is to wrap at least 10,000 books before classes officially begin next week.
Several public schools are set to benefit from this program, including Amado V. Hernandez Elementary School, P. Guevarra Elementary School, and Timoteo Paez Elementary School.
In a previous report, over 100 inmates freed on Independence Day
Family members of the inmates, or their visitors, are also taking part in the activity. The jail has allowed extended visiting hours to give them more time to help with the book covering.
The project not only supports education but also gives inmates an opportunity to contribute positively to the community. It shows how even behind bars, people can make a meaningful impact, especially when it comes to helping children get ready for school.
Through teamwork and generosity, the PDLs and their families are working hard to reach their target and put smiles on students’ faces as the new academic year begins.
