Megan Young was declared as the ultimate winner of the Miss World 2013 title, she is the very-first Filipino contestant who represented and won the much-coveted title as Miss World.
The 23-year-old Megan Young made it to the final Question and Answer portion with one of the most applauded answer given by any contestant. When she was asked, “Why should you become Miss World?”
Before answering the question, she thanked the Indonesian audience through their native language, she also quipped that “I actually brought half of the Philippines here!” after a strong cheer from the audience as Megan was called up on stage.
Megan Young’s achievement in the Miss World competition followed a similar path from the Philippine representatives. During the 2011 edition of Miss World, Gwendoline Ruais finished First Runner-up, while Queneerich Rehman placed in the Top 15 in 2012 edition of Miss World.
Before Megan Young’s achievement as the first Filipino who won the Miss World title, notable Filipino winners were Evangeline Pascual, placed second in 1973; Miss Ruffa Gutierrez, 2nd runner-up in 1993; and Carlene Aguilar, Top 15 in 2005.
Upon receiving the crown on Saturday night at Bali, Indonesia, Megan Young thanked her countrymen and fellow Filipinos, exclaiming to the audience, “Salamat sa mga kababayan ko. Mahal na mahal ko kayo.”
