Human Rights Law Signing Highlights of 27th EDSA Anniversary

The EDSA Anniversary this coming February 25, 2013 will be one of the most remembered celebrations as the President will sign into law which recognized victims of human rights violations during the Marcos administration.

The President of the Philippines, President Benigno Aquino III will sign into law the Human Rights Victims Reparation and Recognition Act of 2013, which will officially recognize “the atrocities committed by the Marcos administration against their own people,” Malacañang said Saturday, February 23.

Around P10 Billion funds recovered by the government from the Marcos’ Swiss bank accounts will be appropriated for victims’ reparation. An estimated 80% of the amount will be spent for existing claims and 20% for the future.

The commission created for the above-mentioned law is mandated to work with the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education to educate young people about the abuses committed by the Marcos regime and the heroism by those who oppose it.

Aside from the closing of some parts of EDSA for the 27th Anniversary, the official residence of the President, The Malacañang Palace will be open to the public in the afternoon.

The EDSA People Power Commission is the main office in charge of the activities during the entire EDSA Anniversary celebrations.
