People Power in Tunisia

Tunisia is one of the countries in the Arab World that have significant contributions in world history. It is a tiny slice of Africa, where the Phoenician City of Carthage was located.  Tunisia suffered an enormous scandals from unemployment to rising food prices and government corruption.

One of the reason that triggered the  people of Tunisia to gather outside and protested against the leadership of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, was the death of  a  vendor by suicide. According to reports,  the vendor who set himself on fire after policemen were trying to put him on custody. The reasons for his arrest is that he has no necessary permit. Prior to that he was also looking for a job but could not avail.

The triumphed of the people of Tunisia was closely watched by the world especially those Arab countries that  are uncertain also about their future. The solidarity of the people of Tunisia proved to be a force to reckon with. They managed to overthrew the regime of  President Zine El Abidine and fled the country to seek political asylum especially to Saudi Arabia.

The President of Tunisia was replaced by Prime Minister Mohammed Ghannouchi who are calling all Tunisians to stop the unrests and help the new government to focus on development and help the economy rebound. President  Zine El Abidine Ben Ali  ruled Tunisia for more than 23 years of autocratic regime.

The ouster of the Tunisian President by the Tunisian people who believed in a collective effort of m(–foul word(s) removed–) protests have proven effective. It is one of the dramatic display of people power. It is considered as the biggest overthrew since the downfall of the Shah of Iran. President Bin Ali had taken refuge to Saudi Arabia, it was confirmed by the Saudi State News Agency after conflicting reports of his whereabouts.

Peoples power in Tunisia have brought also significant changes in the way information is carried out. Some reports described the recent victory as the first ever Wikileaks Revolution and Twitter Revolution.
