President Benigno Simeon Aquino III has appointed former Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) Atty. Andres Bautista as Commission on Election (COMELE) chief on April 28, 2015. The appointment of the former PCGG Chief was approved on April 28, as what Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte revealed.
Aside from the new COMELEC Chief, President Aquino aso appointed Rowena Guanzon and Sheriff Abas as new COMELEC commissioners. The terms of the three new poll officials will expire on Feb. 2, 2022.
Atty. Bautista, the new COMELEC chief will replace retired Comelec chairman Sixto Brillants Jr., while Rowena Guanzon will succeed Commissioner Lucenito Tagle and Elias Yusoph.
The new Comelec chairman is a former Law dean of the Far Eastern University and was appointed by Aquino as chair of the Presidential Commission on Good Government in 2010. Aquino revealed last month that his top choice for the next Comelec chief declined to accept the job.
Aquino said the next Comelec chief should overcome the intense pressure brought about by next year’s presidential election.
