US President Barack Obama expressed his thoughts about the influence of reality television into the national Political debate in America last Monday on the Oprah Winfrey show.
The interview was done in the white house on the day Obama presented his long form birth certificate to the public to end the speculation that he was not born in America.
He told Oprah that the line between entertainment and politics has blurred.
According to him reality TV plays a big role in influencing people on how they think about politics.
He said that every night he reads letters about families who are at risk of losing their homes or describing to him how they feel when they send out more than 16 resume’s but they don’t get any response and they are trying to figure out how they will be able to pay bill their bills. Obama said that this scene is not reality TV, this is real and this are the things that must be given enough attention and spend some time on.
Since the Oprah Winfrey show aired on National Television, Barack Obama was the first president who appeared in the show and he was with his wife Michelle Obama. The episode was part of final event in the show as Winfrey prepares to wrap up production later this month.
Oprah was one of the endorser of Obama during the 2008 campaign for presidency and this was her first time to endorse a politician.
She asked Obama on what is his stand about the documentary entitled “Eyes on the Prize’ wherein it focused on the civil rights movement and she asked Obama whether the American people had lost the idea of what the “prize” is today.
Obama explained that American people did not lose their sense in terms of what the prize is, but in terms of our collective political conversation. He explained that due to this we get distracted all the time.
First Lady Michelle Obama added that what he loves most about his husband is that he knows how to keep his eyes on the prize even in the midst of problems and this characteristic made Obama special.
Obama’s nationality was questioned by many when New York real estate mogul Donald Trump a reality TV host, doubted whether Obama was really born in Hawaii in the year 1961.
