Netizen Exposes Scammers New Modus Using Sim Card Registration
A concerned netizen took to social media and warned the public against the new modus operandi of scammers using sim card registration.
On Facebook, a concerned netizen reported the latest tactic of accused scammers online as Christmas approaches. Justin Carpio, a netizen, revealed his experience after being targeted by scammers.
Netizen Justin claims to have received an email about the Sim Card Registration Act. The email invited him to register his phone number and sent a link to a website where he could submit his details.
The connected website is nearly identical in style to the mobile application and online wallet G-Cash. Based on his post, he is requested to enter his phone number in the form.
This appears to be a method for scammers to obtain the ‘OTP’ of their unsuspecting subscribers in order to gain access to their victims’ G-Cash accounts and steal their money.
“They will tell you na restricted ang GCash account mo dahil you need to process daw the Sim Registration(so dun ka talaga magpapanic). Then may mga link na andun sa email, then pag iclick mo yun, they will ask for your number. Pag nabigay mo ng number mo, you will be asked for the OTP na isesend nila,” said Justin.
“Medyo mahusay na mga mambubudol ngayon. Buti nalang nag check muna ko sa globe. Wala daw silang ganyan process na pinagagawa,” he added in his post.
According to Globe, the registration process for its subscribers has not yet begun. Globe indicated that registration for both new and current sim cards will begin on December 27, 2022. Registrants are also not required to supply OTPs and only pass their ID.
“You can already register your SIM starting December 27, 2022, for both new and existing SIMs. If you have just bought a new SIM, you must register it to activate it and begin using it for call, text, and data services.” according to the Globe website.
