“The Book of Mormon” musical leads in 2011 Tony Awards while gaining 14 Nominations

“The Book of Mormon” Broadway musical from the creators of “South Park” bagged 14 nominations for 2011 Tony Awards.

The musical production was written by the “South Park” creators namely Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Also with them is Robert Lopez who is the co-creator of the Tony Award-winning musical “Avenue Q.”  The three teamed-up with Casey Nicholaw, Parker’s co-director as they also choreographed the event.

The musical story of “The Book of Mormon” is about the two Mormon full time missionaries (–foul word(s) removed–)igned in Africa and later on found its way for something which was more than what they had bargained for.

Nominations for The Book of Mormon musical included the best musical, original score, and lead actor making its way to be the top nominee. Presently, it becomes the box-office darling even if it was performed by stars who without big-names in the entertainment industry.

Candidates for the best actor award would also be Al Pacino as a star in “The Merchant of Venice” likewise to Mark Rylance of UK for the play “Jerusalem”.

Looking back in the 1930s, the “Scottsboro Boys” had grabbed 12 nominations in a story where nine black men had been unfairly accused for attacking two white women on a train in Alabama.

It had been for awards in best musical, book of a musical, original score and leading actor with thumbs up for having two featured actor as well.

On the other hand,”Anything Goes” by Cole Porter also collected nine nominations that includes best actress for “Sutton Foster” and also for best revival. Whereas, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” gained eight nominations carrying possible awards for Daniel Radcliffe of the famous Harry Potter film.

Vying for best actress is the veteran artist Vanessa Redgrave for “Driving Miss Daisy” along with Frances McDormand for “Good People”, Lily Rabe for “The Merchant of Venice”, Hannah Yelland for “Brief Encounter” and Nina Arianda for “Born Yesterday”,

Furthermore, a nomination is also given for Mackenzie Crook, known to be a star in Pirates of the Caribbean, because of his role in “Jerusalem” by Jez Butterworth.

The ceremony will be on June 12 as the awards will be formally announced in New York City.
