Bantag Clarifies the Tunnel Discovered Inside New Bilibid Prison
Suspended Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Gerald Bantag clarified the huge tunnel discovered inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP).
Bantag said that he gave the order to dig a portion of Bilibid in an interview with News 5. It should be recalled that the project in question caused controversy because it is still evident that a tunnel leading to Bilibid is being dug.
Bantag clarified that he is exclusively interested in having a pool inside NBP. As a scuba diver, the suspended BuCor chief emphasized his intention to create a deep pool for diving sports.
“Alam ko ‘yon, ‘yong hukay na ‘yon. Ako rin nagpahukay no’n. Diver ako eh, scuba diver. Ang plano namin do’n, deep swimming pool,” said Bantag.
The assumption made by acting BuCor chief Gregorio Catapang that the aforementioned pit leads to Bilibid is likewise claimed to be incorrect. Based on the report, Bantag claims that he wants his project to have Metro Manila’s deepest swimming pool.
“Malalim ‘yon, gagawin sana naming swimming pool. Ang dami naming scuba divers do’n. Master scuba diver ako eh. Kaya mahilig akong ano, gusto namin pinaka-deepest swimming pool sana dito sa Metro Manila siguro,” he says.
Bantag’s answer is disputed by some officials, particularly because it is not the responsibility of BuCor to construct a swimming pool inside the NBP. One of the figures who questioned the purpose of a swimming pool within Bilibid is Sen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa.
“Kung gusto mo talaga ng malalim na tubig kung saan mag dive ka, punta ka sa dagat. Bakit gagastos ka pa ng napakalaki para lang diyan sa gagawin mong pag paraktisan mo lang ng dive dive,” said Dela Rosa.
“I don’t see the practicality of such project. Anyway, kung talagang may pondo, siguro dumaan ‘yan sa posisyon nila, pero kung walang pondo, isang question mark pa rin ang pagkagawa niyan,” he added.
