Philippines will mark the annual celebration of the Labor Day this coming May 1, 2014 which falls on Thursday with the theme “Sa Sipag, Tiyaga, at Talino, Buong Mundo Saludo sa Manggagawang Pilipino.” The Labor Day is listed as one of the country’s 15 national holidays for 2014 based upon Proclamation 655 signed by President Benigno Simeon Aquino III.

According to the Philippine History, the first Labour Day celebration was held May 1, 1903 in a mammoth rally in front of Malacañan Palace staged by the Union Obrera Democratica (Democratic Laborer’s Union), while compelling for workers’ economic rights.
May 1, 2014 Labor Day is just one of the National Regular Holiday declared by the Philippine government.

- January 1, 2014 – New Year’s Day
- April 9, 2014 – Araw ng Kagitingan (Fall of Bataan)
- April 17, 2014 – Maundy Thursday
- April 18, 2014 – Good Friday
- May 1, 2014 – Labor Day
- June 12, 2014 – Araw ng Kalayaan (Independence Day)
- August 25, 2014 – National Heroes Day
- November 30, 2014 – Bonifacio Day
- December 25, 2014 – Christmas Day
- December 30, 2014 – Rizal Day
Based upon the Department of Labor and Employment’s Handbook on Workers’ Statutory Monetary Benefits (2014 edition), employees are entitled to get “at least 100% of his/her minimum wage rate eve if he/she did not report for work” on regular holidays.
Employees working during national holidays will get 200% of their regular rate. However, he/she is required to be present or should be registered for on leave of absence with pay in order to avail the regular holiday pay.
