Filipino Chess Grandmaster Wesley So moved up in the worldwide chess rankings as he increased his Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) rankings worldwide at No. 28.
The 20-year-old Wesley So climbed his rankings from the No. 30 worldwide to No. 28 although his rating remained at 2719. The recent release of FIDE rankings does not his perfect six-of-six performance in the 2013 Pan American Inter-Collegiate Championship in Lubbock, Texas.
Wesley So powered the Webster U to an impressive title sweep and emerged as the best individual performer of the strongest collegiate tournament in the Americas.
If the results of the 2013 Pan American Inter-Collegiate Championship was included in the recent FIDE Rankings release, Wesley So’s rating will leapfrog to 2728.7, which is good enough for the No. 24 worldwide FIDE rankings.
The Pinoy chess grandmaster will increase further as he plunges into a bigger, stronger tournament in the 76th Tata Steel Chess Tournament slated from January 10 to 26 in Wijk aan Zee, The Netherlands. Wesley SO will play against 11 other super GMs including eight chess players who are currently in the Top 20 list worldwide.
Top seeded players who will participate in the world prestigious chess tournament includes World No. 2 Armenian Grandmaster Levon Aronian, the three-time winner of the competition including the last two tournaments.
Wesley So will be the second youngest participant in the 76th Tata Steel Chess Tournament, the youngest chess player to participate is the Dutch GM Anish Giri, an eight-month younger than Pinoy Grandmaster Wesley So.
